Christmas is a special time of the year for us all. Another year has passed and Santa is coming again…have you been good or not so good this year and will there be something under the tree for you??
For us, Christmas brings a chance to enjoy time with friends and family, celebrating how fortunate we are to enjoy some excellent wines. We always look to open something special at Christmas, something we’ve treasured and had deep in the cellar for a while. Whether it is Vintage Champagne, a luscious Chardonnay, an aged Riesling or a lighter Pinot Noir, something special is definitely on the cards.
Christmas also brings the start of our second year of business. On December 1st, we celebrated our first birthday!
Over the last year, we have loved bringing you all some of the best wines from around Australia and the world. We are grateful to all our clients and their support! And next year we know will be bigger and better, with some exciting new wine offerings coming in 2019.
With thanks to you, our clients, we have been able to speak to wineries and their wine-makers globally. This has afforded us the opportunity to try and enjoy some incredible wines further helping us source the best wines for you.
State of Play in Wine.
Making our way around the country itself, as we make comment on 'the state of wine' in 2018.
In Western Australia, we saw two 99 point white wines this year (Moss Wood Chardonnay & Dukes Magpie Hill Riesling), it shows us that WA wineries are doing something right! Meanwhile nationally, we think it's important to highlight the quality of white wine in Australia, with the white wine market maturing and challenging even the likes of the Old World regions of Burgundy, Chablis & the Loire Valley. Speaking with a well known Decanter Magazine Judge. They are simply blown away, just how incredible they are when looked at on a world stage and more-so, how affordable they are, when compared to the internationals.
Back to WA, we have seen the introduction of the ‘Super Premium’ class (especially with Cabernet in Margaret River). We believe that this is sure to continue in future years, with even talk of a formal setting of Wilyabrup as its own appellation.
And as the 2016 (current) vintage of Cabernet from Wilyabrup, as well as Cabernet on a national scale roll out (which are to die for), we are already hearing rumblings that the 2018 vintage, nationally but more specifically in WA may be touted as one of ’The best vintages in Margaret River in 30years’.
This is just a snippet of the myriad of information we continue to keep ourselves abreast of, as we ensure we constantly can be aware of the state of wine globally. Ensuring we can service all your wine needs.
The Vine House Year That Was
Throughout the year, we saw the normal mix of Australian Wines. From Rieslings to Shiraz’s to Sparkling to Sauvignon Blancs and everything in between. The usual names of Grosset, Shaw & Smith, Penfold’s, Henschke, Wynns, Taylors, Wolf Blass and Turkey Flat all continue to produce excellent wines.
Then there was the lesser known and newer wineries, that really blew us away. South by South West (The Margaret River Super-Girls), Glaetzer Wines (Barossa’s Godfather, Ben Glaetzer), La Linea (a brilliant Adelaide Hills producer, trying something different), Forest Hill (Denmark based and has AMAZING Riesling!) and Seville Estate (Enough said…).
We had the pleasure of meeting with winemakers from Fraser Gallop, Singlefile, Jim Barry, Brokenwood, Amelia Park, Deep Woods, Seville Estate, West Cape Howe and Evans & Tate, to name a few. The chance to speak directly with the winery’s gave us an insight into where they are taking their brands and the future for their wines.
We're grateful for the spectacular experiences we've had with everyone and we look forward to growing more relationships both at home and abroad to give you access to the best wines globally!

Now to the good stuff. After the year that was, we’ve complied our 12 Wines of Christmas, which will be the wines we will be drinking this festive season.
